The Heart and Blood Vessels
There are two types of Circulatory Systems
- Open systems : This is when the blood is pumped through vessels but it leaves the vessels to flow into the cells then flows into the heart
- Closed systems : In this system the blood remains in the blood vessels with substances coming in and out of the blood. i.e. Blood DOES NOT leave the vessels
Humans have a Closed Circulatory system which consists of the Heart > Arteries > Arterioles > Capillaries > Venules > Veins > Heart
Blood Vessels
Arteries carry blood Away from the Heart (a for away)
Veins carry blood to the heart
Capillaries connect veins to arteries

The Pulmonary Artery carries Deoxgenated Blood
The Pulmonary Vein carries Oxygenated Blood
Blood Pressure is the force the blood exerts against the wall of a blood vessel
The Heart
The heart is a double pump which means two circuits are actually present. The Pulmonary and Systemic Circuit.
- Pulmonary Circuit: {HEART > LUNGS > HEART}
This circuit involves the Pulmonary Vein and Pulmonary Artery. Deoxygenated Blood is carried to the Lungs by the Pulmonary Artery where the blood becomes oxygenated and is returned to the Heart via the Pulmonary Vein.
- Systemic Circuit: {HEART > BODY > HEART}
In this circuit the oxygenated blood is then pumped to the rest of the body via the aorta while the deoxygenated blood in the body is pumped back to the heart through the Vena Cava
